About April Towner

April Towner grew up watching her mother photograph and admiring National Geographic photographs. However, her international travels as an adult catalyzed the shift from admiring to creating photographs. In addition to the allure of the artisanal nature of photography, she is also captivated by the adventure and exploration photography offers. Her camera leads her places she would be unlikely to venture and explore. Indiana Jones has his whip for his adventures, and she has her camera. She is a camera shy photographer with a sense of humor.  She began photography using film. Photographers she admires include W. Eugene Smith, Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier Bresson, Walker Evans, Ansel Adams, Josef Koudelka, Edward Weston, Sebastian Salgado, Michael Kenna, Annie Leibovitz and Magnum Photos. Her favorite photography periodical is Lenwork.

Artist Statement

April Towner is an artist, visual and literary. For April, photography is a means of creating using the visual elements of the world around us to see and perceive. She practices photography as art and spiritual discipline. Photography is an art of seeing and composing images with light. A painter uses various paints and a photographer uses light. It consists of externally representing an internal vision; Photography is making the abstract concretely visible, conspicuous, and more accessible. The composition of the elements making a photograph depicts a visual narrative. This is the nature of Yllumyn, to illumine.
